Another gem of creativity from Stephen Pastis

At times, cartoonists don't have a very contemporary idea to fill into their strips. This is the real test of their potential as entertainers.

Pearls Before Swine is a strip by Stephan Pastis. Its a pretty good one.

In this strip, the guy wearing the cap is Stephan himself (odd that he appears in his own comic strip, talking to his characters). The nasty rat and the fat pig are two of his characters.

Survival Theory

Since the time the scientist found out that the cockroach will survive a nuclear bomb, people have started demanding that money be invested into research that will turn humans into cockroaches in the event of a nuclear holocaust. I truly believe that is rubbish.

Here is a better survival theory:

Ego-Man

Jerry Seinfeld said this about the male brain - "All men see themselves as some low-level superheroes in their own world. When me are growing up and they are reading about Batman, Superman, Spiderman; these aren't fantasies. These are options!"

With the earth's population increasing and the threats to US increasing even faster, the American directors ran out of superheroes. So, they went ahead and made a new series - "Heroes", where they manufacture tailor-made heroes every week to suit the needs of the dynamically changing terrorist threats and villains on TV of course.

To add to the ongoing list of super heroes, here's my favourite

Deja-vu

This cartoon seems so ironic to me right now. Coincidently, I read it on a day when I would have hoped that I had some similar inspiration in my life. Sid quotes Forest Gump - "Shit happens!"

The one where there is no cartoon

This is a song from the last Calvin & Hobbes book - "It's a magical world, Hobbes ol' buddy!"

My mom and dad

From: It's a Magical World

My mom and my dad are not what they seem.
Their dull appearance is part of their scheme.
I know of their plans. I know their techniques.
My parents are outer space alien freaks!

They landed on earth in spaceships humongous.

Posing as grownups, they now walk among us.
My parents deny this, but I know the truth.
They're here to enslave me and spoil my youth.

Early each morning, as the sun rises,
Mom and dad put on their earthling disguises.

I knew right away their masks weren't legit.
Their faces are lined - they sag and don't fit.

The earth's gravity makes them sluggish and slow.
They say not to run, wherever I go.
They live by the clock. They're slaves to routines.

They work the year 'round. They're almost machines.

They deny that TV and fried food have much worth.
They cannot be human. They're not of this earth.
I cannot escape their alien gaze,
And they're warping my mind with their alien ways.

For sinister plots, this one is a gem.
They're bringing me up to turn me into them!
The presence of this song on this blog is indeed an ode to Debo's refined taste in reading.

Language Barrier

On a visit to Pondicherry, my brother Tinni saw a Vegiterranean Restaurant. We laughed our guts out at it. It is only later that I realized that William Shakespeare invented over 1700 words in English Language. Check the list over here. But these days there is much more competition to get your words into dictionary.

Cartoonist cameos

When I saw the end of the Spiderman cartoon series, I was quite amazed to see Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, jump into the last episode and walk around with Spiderman. The whole idea of the author appearing as a character in his own creation seems to be very fascinating to me. Stephen Pastis knows the art of staging cameos in his own comic strip. Here is a classic example.
